Rush |
|
If you are interested in Kappa Phi Lambda, rush is a great opportunity to meet our down-to-earth sisters and learn more about our sorority. Although rush is over for this semester, we will be having informal rush events throughout the semester. Events are free and rides are provided with no obligation. |

Frequently Asked Questions What is Rush? What does it involve? Rush is a period of time at the beginning of every semester where organizations (fraternities and sororities) try to recruit members. If you choose to participate, you become a rushee. There are no commitments or promises required during rush. Rush is a time when we hold events for you to come out and get to know the sisters of KPL. During the week, you will get to know who we are, what we do, what we stand for, etc. This week is for you to decide if Kappa Phi Lambda is for you, and for us to decide if you are for Kappa Phi Lambda. Rush is a great time to meet new people and have some fun. Join is this semester; it is completely free!
Are there any requirements to join? Do you have to be Asian? In order to be eligible to intake, you must have a GPA of at least 2.25 and be currently enrolled as a UMBC student. You do NOT have to be Asian. We have many differently nationalities represented within Kappa Phi Lambda, and as a cultural sorority, we encourage diversity. We look for individuals that are/were involved with clubs and community service activities, but that does not mean that you cannot rush if you haven’t. Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. is an equal opportunity organization.
What is a bid? How do I get one? After the end of rush week, we ask that you come in and spend some time talking to sisters one-on-one. This is the final chance that we have to get to know you a little bit better before we give out bids. Bids are out invitation for you to pledge for our sorority. Interviews are usually an hour or less, and conducted with other rushees. It is just a question and answer session where we ask you about your personality and interests. There is also a rush application that we ask all rushees to fill out. It will ask you for your information and your feedback on the rush events you attended. You must be interviewed, fill out an application, and attend a minimum number of events to be considered for a bid. Once you receive a bid, you have 24 hours to think and come back to us with an answer, stating whether or not you would like to take the next step in pledging for Kappa Phi Lambda.
What is intaking (pledging)? Do you haze? If you accept your bid, you become inducted in a formal ceremony with the rest of your class (the other girls who also accepted their bids). After induction, you are all officially intake members. The other members of your class (your line sisters) and you are on your journey towards sisterhood! There are no specific guidelines on how long you will intake for, or how hard it will be. The point of intaking is to challenge you and teach you more about yourself, your line sisters, and the sisters of Kappa Phi Lambda. We DO NOT haze—we would not have done it ourselves if it involved hazing. Intaking IS difficult. There’s no nice way to say that. It’s a big time commitment, and not to be taken lightly. When you work hard for something, you appreciate it that much more when you earn it; that is how intaking is.
How do I know if a sorority is right for me? There is no one RIGHT reason to join a sorority, but there are lots of benefits. However, there are a lot of WRONG reasons to join. If you only want to meet new people, think fraternity guys are hot, and only want to party, then you’re rushing the wrong sorority. Each sorority and fraternity has different values and ethics. If you find that the values of the organization coincide with your own then that organization is probably a good fit for you. |
